Krishna K. Gupta | July 29, 2020

I’m excited to announce REMUS’ first deal. We’ve co-led a $1.18M seed round  in Spotta, a Cambridge, UK-based company using smart IoT devices, AI, and chemistry to preventatively detect various pests, starting with bed bugs and bugs occurring in forests. Founded by a couple rebels from Cambridge University, Spotta’s technology and science has never before been applied in the pest management industry. I’ll be joining the board, after getting to know the team over the past 3 years, and my London colleague Marc will partner closely with me. This is one more representation of our commitment to the Cambridge ecosystem.

I first met founders Robert and Neil in 2017, when I was taking introductory coffee meetings on the Cambridge campus. Even back then, a couple things about them stood out to me:

  1. The founders had been working together for a decade, starting with their time as engineering students at Cambridge, and had decided to take a very non-traditional post-university path by setting up their own consulting business. Both were technically sound and had built a solid partnership tested over many years.
  1. The founders have a specialized expertise around low-power devices: functional applications that can operate with a battery for long periods of time. Their consulting business enabled them to work on a variety of such applications, which exposed them to technical corner cases and an intuitive understanding well beyond nearly anyone in the world. They wrote to me “we are experienced product developers and we’ve decided that the time is right to…develop our own products.” I love when technical founders feel ready to build products based on technology they know very well and market needs they’ve uncovered along the way.

When I first met the Spotta team, they were deliberating about which pest market(s) and industries to pursue initially. What they already had, though, was the hunger to build something large. Since then, I’ve enjoyed getting to know them better, including a memorable walk through Hyde Park with Robert, where I better understood his vision for the company.

Spotta’s vision is to be a platform that merges its sensors X software expertise with the latest chemistry to tackle an industry that hasn’t evolved for decades. Indoors and outdoors, pests are an increasing nuisance and health risk to customers. They are also becoming increasingly resistant to existing pesticides used to repel or eliminate them. The pest control industry is worth hundreds of billions of dollars globally, and if Spotta is successful in capturing the monitoring and prevention part of the value chain alone, it can become a massive business.

Spotta leverages the promising opportunity at the intersection of sensors X software that is increasingly pervasive across industries. Passive monitoring is a powerful way for businesses to gather data and intervene “real-time,” preventing negative outcomes for customers and enabling them to optimize existing processes.

The company’s first applications – for bed bugs and forestry – offer compelling and contrasting opportunities to fine-tune its technology on real problems in the real world. Pest problems are plentiful; for instance, bed bug infestations have grown 4500% over the past two decades, and forest pests are eating away at hundreds of millions of dollars every year. For an early seed-stage company, Spotta has made great strides in getting its technology to the point where it can create measurable value for real customers.

Marc and I are excited about partnering with Spotta at this stage to help build the platform. We are starting by helping them hire a commercial lead and think through US market entry strategy. We are looking forward to a deep collaboration over the next decade!

American Tech Wins on Merger Monday; Is NVIDIA the Best-Performing AI Company? – Remus Capital

American Tech Wins on Merger Monday; Is NVIDIA the Best-Performing AI Company?

Sign up for our newsletter

Krishna K. Gupta | September 14, 2020

Two massive deals were announced today, and both signify rising ambitions of large American tech firms.

The Oracle-TikTok arrangement is an unlikely alliance between a staid B2B company and the fastest-growing B2C app at scale. It’s the first major domino to fall in the US-China tech war (let’s not forget that TikTok is the first Chinese app to become a leader in the US) whose repercussions will be felt for years, as both countries may develop entirely parallel tech ecosystems. It’s also a reminder that Gen Z determines the next wave of ‘cool’ — and everyone wants a piece.

The more interesting of the deals is the NVIDIA-ARM merger. Softbank needs cash, as they’re selling at an essentially flat valuation. The deal solidifies NVIDIA as a next-generation powerhouse, one that can offer both the software and chips required in the age of AI. Its market cap is past $300B and has nearly 25Xed over the past 5 years. Is NVIDIA the best-performing AI company in the world? Is it poised to be the best-performing AI company over the next 5 years? The answer to both may be yes.

Both deals are wins for the American tech ecosystem. Building an enduring company requires audacity and resilience. NVIDIA’s trajectory over the past few years hints at a strategic corporate vision that went well beyond its origin as a provider of chips for the gaming industry. Its best-in-class chips were equally well-suited for similar parallel processing applications in the broader AI revolution. The acquisition of ARM should secure NVIDIA’s position in that revolution and enable it to become a true platform. Like NVIDIA, the best companies will use the next couple years to be consolidators as win-win opportunities come to the market. This, in turn, will lead to more platform companies, which – it seems – will almost universally be American or Chinese.

The ARM deal is also a win for the UK, as NVIDIA will invest in its local ecosystem with a much more focused strategy than Softbank did. ARM will remain relatively autonomous, and a new wave of research will hopefully yield a next generation of ARMs. We stand ready to help make that a reality through our London office!

Nietzsche and the Rebels: A Conversation with Brad Feld & Krishna K. Gupta – Remus Capital

Nietzsche and the Rebels: A Conversation with Brad Feld & Krishna K. Gupta

Krishna K. Gupta | June 17, 2021

In Brad Feld’s world, entrepreneurs “entrepreneur with a hammer… you’re trying to bash your way through something totally new against the backdrop of constraints.” Putting the Nietzschean hammer in the entrepreneur’s hand is a novel image, but it’s one that makes perfect sense and is the impetus behind Brad’s new book: The Entrepreneur’s Weekly Nietzsche: A Book for Disruptors.

I’ve long admired Brad as a rebel who marches to his own beat, both as a venture capitalist and a human being. I reached out to Brad—a fellow MIT alum—early in my entrepreneurial journey, and I’ve always appreciated his responsiveness, his no bullshit approach, and his offers to help.

I was thus pleasantly surprised when Brad reached out to me after reading about my admiration for Nietzsche. He and his MIT friend Dave Jilk had just published this book with 52 morsels of weekly advice for entrepreneurs from the great philosopher.

I have read many of the classic philosophers, but none has inspired my rebellious journey as an entrepreneur as much as Nietzsche has. My interest in Nietzsche began when I was 16, sparked by readings in Father Francisco Nahoe’s English class at Andover.

While many entrepreneurs may view philosophy as a useless thought experiment, Reid Hoffman articulates otherwise in his brilliant foreword to Brad and Dave’s book. Indeed, philosophy helped ground some of history’s greatest men and women of action in a deep understanding of themselves and the world around them.

At REMUS, we are looking for rebels seeking to redefine the future. As Reid writes, “Nietzsche…felt that the highest pursuit of the human soul was to seek human evolution: evolution of identity, of culture, of new mind.” Rebel creators have an edge that other entrepreneurs do not: they pursue evolution of ideas, technologies, and ways of operating. This is why this new book aligns so well with our firm’s way of thinking.

Brad, Father Francisco, and I had a fun conversation discussing Brad and Dave’s book, and I encourage you to give it a watch/listen. I am buying this book for every entrepreneur in our portfolio, and I hope you all might consider examining Nietzsche through this new lens. As a preview, here are my notes on 5 chapters (1 from each section) that really resonated with me, both as an entrepreneur and as an investor:

1) Finding your way (Strategy) – I’ve never cared much for what others think, nor have I believed there is “THE WAY” to do anything. You have to find YOUR WAY as an entrepreneur. The concept of  embracing your own world and eschewing society’s structures is very Nietzschean.

2) Surpassing (Culture) – If you’re not constantly leveling up as an entrepreneur, you are actually falling behind, because the world around you is always moving. Entrepreneurs must instill this culture of leveling up across their organizations, but many have difficulty  upgrading their leadership teams due to complacency. Life—and business—is a constant journey of surpassing the last moment.

3) Delight in yourself (Free Spirits) – You have to love the entrepreneurial journey. It is such a difficult road to build a great company from scratch. It’s lonely, it’s full of rejection and self-doubt, and it usually ends in failure. The only way to grow as an entrepreneur and maximize your chance of success is to love the journey—and yourself.

4) Gratitude and integrity (Leadership) – We often think of entrepreneurs as uninterested in the well-being of people around them. In my experience, though, the best entrepreneurs are good humans. They are authentic, they have gratitude for those who help them, and they are honest with everyone, including themselves. The greatest leaders are well-liked, even if a desire to be well-liked is not the driving force behind their decisions.

5) Sustaining intensity (Tactics) – The journey of building a great company is long. When the journey is going well, it is very easy for entrepreneurs to take their eyes off the prize and lose their intensity. That is often fatal, because the world doesn’t stop for anyone. It is thus critical for entrepreneurs to find ways to sustain intensity within themselves and their teams. Building a great company is neither just a marathon, nor just a sprint: it is a marathon full of sprints.

Through this philosophical lens, may we all re-envision our entrepreneurial journeys, keeping in mind that there are no absolute truths, no absolute values, and that it is up to us to stamp ourselves on every moment of our journey.

Wolf. Twins. Rome. REMUS.

Who is REMUS? What do we really know about the twins who founded an empire along the Tiber? About the brother who has spent so much of history cloaked in shadow?

In recent years, I’ve become hooked by the untold story of REMUS, a mystery of mythology that moved from Athens to Rome. We all know the usual story, but the source code reveals much more depth to REMUS who, in many of the earliest versions, may have in fact been the sole founder of Rome. His resolve and resilience prompted him to challenge the most entrenched kind of status quo – the relationship with a sibling – for the sake of building the best foundation. REMUS was a rebel building the next big thing.

Since I founded Romulus in my MIT dorm room as a 21-year-old punk, a lot has changed in the world. Technology is life. Founders are cool. Venture capital is exploding. The decade ahead signals vast dislocation and opportunity for capitalists who have seen this story before and have the ability to take a long-term perspective. Having started the firm at the beginning of the last “dislocation” in 2008, our team has been part of many success stories; we are thus excited about the future, including the human-machine interface, the intersection of healthcare and software, and the next industrial revolution.

I’ve realized, however, that the untold stories – the less-traveled paths taken by underdogs like REMUS who dream about changing the world – are the ones I find most interesting. I’ve found that I’m deeply contrarian, viscerally opposed to the prevailing way of thinking and doing. I’ve built my business around an idea that shouldn’t be revolutionary but often is: that great companies aren’t built in a day and require strategic building – not wishful betting. I’m most interested in the businesses upending the hype cycles, not promoting them, in the companies disrupting the status quo. I’m most interested, I’ve come to learn, in the rebels.

To code the future by rewiring history – this is what excites us.

Today, we are rewiring the story of REMUS. He is reborn, renewed, reimagined. And so am I: today I announce that I’m rebranding my next steps to REMUS.

REMUS might have said ‘Finis origine pendet’ – the end depends on the beginning. We are beginning this evolution with the intention to grow our platform into one of the world’s great ones. LET’S GO!

If you would like to be part of our journey, please sign up here for our monthly newsletter. Read below for more detail on how REMUS will evolve.

THE REMUS REMIT

REMUS is a new firm as much as it is a rebrand. Much of what we have built over the past decade – from people to principles – will continue to hold, but we will more actively incorporate what we have learned from working with so many entrepreneurs to refresh our offering.

REMUS is Romulus redux in some ways. We will still partner with the most ambitious entrepreneurs leveraging technology and/or science to create massive value. We will still focus on building, not betting – we are not interested in a spray-and-pray approach. We have renewed the founding hunger and ambition that characterized our earliest days.

REMUS will, however, be an edgier, more audacious evolution of that firm. I’ve evolved as a person, as an entrepreneur, and as an investor over the past decade. In this new iteration, we will be bolder and act on intuition in a more agile manner. We will take the necessary steps toward becoming a platform, leaning into the unique duality that defines us: a young and scrappy outlook paired with hard-won experience.

REMUS’ centers of gravity will be more equally distributed across Boston, San Francisco, and London – geographies in which our team has had extensive experience. Our first three deals have centered in each of these three cities.

REMUS will be even more connected to global markets, particularly in Asia. Contrary to a certain sentiment, we believe Western companies should engage more deeply with China, India, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East – but on their own terms. We will place a Venture Partner in Asia and will ramp up our engagement with the region through our own firm and through portfolio companies.

REMUS will make a more proactive effort to be inclusive and diverse. To that effect, we announced our search for a Black EIR a few weeks ago. We are actively in discussions with candidates and hope to announce our EIR by the end of summer. We are similarly focused on expanding our engagement with female entrepreneurs, executives, and board members.

REMUS will adopt a more technically-forward worldview. Most of the people we hire and support will be engineers. I have always had a bias toward engineers as (a) we are natural problem-solvers and (b) the world’s biggest opportunities are increasingly technical.

REMUS is born from the ashes of the COVID crisis, much as Romulus was born in the midst of the Great Recession. Once again, we will leverage our leanness and entrepreneurial hunger to build great companies in what we believe will be a recessionary environment.

There is much more to come as we grow – we look forward to sharing it over time.
